How to Build a Team and Where to Start

There is an old adage that states, You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Have you heard that before? Yes, No, or Possibly?

When you think it that statement, it makes sense. Those 5 people are the ones who are speaking most into your life. When you have problems, issues, successes, joys, failures, and accomplishments you engage and talk with those 5 people. The words they speak are helping or guide your perspective, view, filters through which you experience the world around you.

However, before we go any further, we all must ask ourselves an important question: Are these 5 people the right and best people to help us grow, mature, develop, and become who we desire to be and where we desire to go?

Good questions!

This is more poignant, “Show me your friends, and I will show you your future!”

Whoa!

When your begin to Imagine the Future you are thinking, dreaming, envisioning what could be next in your life journey. What mountain do you desire to climb next, where you want to go, explore, experience, and discover joy, peace, hope, or whatever it is you are seeking.

Where should you start?

In sport, you had a coach, parent, friend, etc. that desired for you to be successful within your sport. There was a common purpose and direction you both yearned to see come to fruition. In chapter 9 of SHIFT, we zero in on the African proverb, to go fast go alone, to go far go together. One easy win to achieve is to identify a common purpose outside of yourself that you would like to invest your time, talent, and treasure. It doesn’t have to be a major focus, take over your life, type of purpose. But, it does need to have some power and pull for you in it.

A common purpose gives you the opportunity to lock arms with someone else and go further together. 2 action steps you can take today to guide you throughout building your own team as you navigate transitions:

  • Clarify those 5 people you want to speak into your life, make adjustments as needed.
  • Identify a common purpose with those you desire to speak and build into your life to make a difference in the world around you.

When you go by yourself, you can go fast, but in order to create sustainability and longevity, you must find others to join you. Be your own coach and begin putting your team together today!

Your transitions are opportunities, seize them!
