How’s Your Vision
“Where there is no vision, people perish!”
Ancient Proverb“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”
Hellen Keller
A picture speaks a thousand words, the old saying goes! This is true for a photograph or image seen online, but it is also true for what we can imagine in our minds.
In sport we celebrate and acknowledge the brilliance of those with superior “court vision” or being able to “thread” a pass where others couldn’t think possible. The athlete had the vision and ability to see something that others couldn’t and then have the courage and guts to make it happen and execute!
Growing up playing basketball, I would pretend to be Magic Johnson or Isaiah Thomas running the court and do a no-look or behind-the-back pass. But before I would attempt these passes on the court I would envision myself in the NBA playing in front of thousands, on the biggest stage running the court, and then assisting with one of these amazing passes.
I am a huge proponent of Visualization and Imagining what you desire to accomplish or achieve. See yourself holding the trophy or hitting a specific time in a race, certain scenarios in competition, giving an interview, or public speaking.
I started this practice early on in life simply dreaming about it one day, but it wasn’t until I was in university that I began to incorporate the practice of visualization into my sport and imagine what could be throughout other various aspects of my life.
Here are a few questions that help in the process of imagining the future:
- What did I desire to accomplish in sport?
- What does playing at my best look like?
- What job would I most want to be in?
- Where could I excel and be challenged in life?
- What do I desire my future relationships to look like?
- Where do I hope to travel and how will I make that happen?
- How would my future best self navigate different aspects of my life?
So, what about you?
The beauty of Imagine the Future in the SHIFT framework is taking the time to sit with an idea or thought of what could be and begin to put imagination to it so that it comes alive in your mind.
Your life is filled with different chapters, ultimately culminating in your life’s story. When you invest and take the time to imagine the future, intentionally picture it, you are taking ownership of your life. You are penning your story and NOT allowing others to write it for you.
Take ownership today, it is your choice to pen your story by Imagining it first through visualization!
When you can visualize transitions and change in your mind, it will give you more confidence when you actually go through it.
Life is full of transitions, be confident in the present!
