The Power of Story: Heroes, Guides, and Overcoming Obstacles
What is it about a great story that draws you into the narrative?
It is as if you are part of the story, the journey of the hero, or the struggle of the main character, or you see aspects of the villain or victim within yourself. You can relate to the joy, the pain, the struggle, and the success.
When you read, watch, or listen to a great story your imagination thrusts you into the storyline and you get lost in the journey.
But have you ever thought about your story?
Did you know that you have a powerful story as well?
It is not right for any one person to hide, dismiss, or downplay their story! Everyone’s story needs to be shared because there is power in YOUR story!
The agony and reality of life are that most don’t spend the time to remember or write down their story. So the longer you go in this life, the more of your past you forget.
Winston Churchill shares that the further back you can see, the further forward you can go. There is power, and it grows, as you remember your story; and it enables you to go further into the future!
Ok, when was the last time you shared, talked about, remembered your story?
In chapter 2 of SHIFT, I share about six milestones to help trigger your memory to guide you in writing your story.
Here you go:
- Who is a Hero from your past and why?
- What is your History — those early development years that shaped you?
- Who has given you a Helping Hand and how did that impact your life?
- How have you experienced Heartache or Hurt and how has the influenced your perspective and lens toward life and people?
- What are the Hopes in your soul and life? Your sense of possibility?
- What are the Highlights, those major moments in your life athletically, relationally, educationally, emotionally, and spiritually?
As you reflect on these 6 H’s, it is important to write them down. As you write down your milestones, you are laying a stronger foundation for your future and the impact you can have on the world around you!
Your story has power: remember it, write it, and share it with others!
